Location
Missouri State University's main campus is located on 225 acres in the heart of Springfield. A 125-acre agriculture center exists in the southwest area of the city. Missouri State University's main campus has 18 classroom buildings, an administrative building, a library, 12 residence halls, a multipurpose recreational facility,a sports complex, a health center, and a campus-wide transit facility.
Facts
Missouri State University is the second largest university in the state. It is located in the state's third largest city with a metropolitan service area of approximately 330,000. Its student body is geographically diverse, with students from all of the 114 counties in Missouri, and from 45 states and 80 foreign countries. Since 1986, more than 250 National Merit Finalists have enrolled at Missouri State University. The university currently has nearly 450 valedictorians and salutatorians in its student body.
Enrollment
In the fall of 2004, Missouri State University's enrollment was 20,846 with 19,330 students on the Springfield Campus and 1,651 on the West Plains Campus. The percentage of graduate students on the Springfield campus has more than doubled since 1992, rising from 8.3 percent to 16.6 percent.
Construction Since 1993, more than $150 million in construction has been funded and/or completed, with about half coming from state appropriations and the remainder from other sources.
Students
The average ACT score of entering freshmen remains above both the state and national averages. The average ACT score for first-time freshmen was 23.6 in fall 2003 compared to 21.7 in fall 1995. With the planned full implementation of selective admission standards over the next several years, the academic profile of entering freshmen will continue to improve.
Faculty Size
On the Springfield Campus, Missouri State University has a total of 730 full-time instructional faculty and 270 part-time faculty. The student to faculty ratio is approximately 18:1.
Speakers
A series of speakers has come to campus to address citizenship and other public affairs issues. The speakers have included two Nobel Peace Prize winners in six months, F. W. de Klerk and Elie Wiesel, as well as former head of the National Endowment for the Humanities Lynne Cheney, former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley, 1997 Inaugural Poet Miller Williams, and senior editor of The Wall Street Journal Joseph N. Boyce.
Alumni
Noted Missouri State University alumni include Missouri Governor Bob Holden; David D. Glass, 1960 graduate and chairman of the Executive Committee of the Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Board of Directors, and owner, chairman and CEO of the Kansas City Royals Baseball Organization; John Goodman, 1975 graduate and film and television star; Kathleen Turner, a film and stage actor who attended Missouri State University; and Tess Harper, 1972 graduate and film and television star. Others include actor/director Sterling Macer and 2003 American League batting champ, Bill Mueller, Boston Redsox third baseman; Jason Whittle, New York Giants guard; and Brad St. Louis, long-snapper for the Cincinnati Bengals.
Technology
Missouri State University's extended campus is an array of distance learning technologies and delivery systems, including audioconferencing, radio, television (interactive video, telecourses, microwave), satellite transmission, audio cassette and video cassette programs, and a variety of computer-based systems, including sychronous computer conferencing. Approximately 2,500 students are served through this virtual campus setting each year.
