Key responsibilities include:

Providing Leadership and Oversight The board offers guidance and resources to ensure the effective execution of the Alumni Association’s strategic plan. This includes ensuring alignment with the university's broader goals and the advancement division.
Strategic Planning and Alignment The board helps direct the long-term vision and priorities of the Alumni Association, ensuring it continues to support Missouri State University's mission.
Program and Activity Implementation The board oversees the successful implementation of various programs and activities that engage alumni and strengthen their connection with the university.

All board directors serve on one of five standing committees:

- College and Constituency Engagement
- Philanthropy Engagement
- Student and Young Alumni Engagement
Ad hoc committees are appointed by the Chair and include:
- Nominating
- Alumni Awards
- Strategic Planning
As indicated by the association's needs and priorities, the board chair may call additional committees to action.
Board members of the Missouri State University Alumni Association are expected to actively contribute to the success of the organization. The key expectations include:
- Attend and Prepare for Meetings: Board members are expected to attend all board meetings, come prepared to discuss agenda items and issues, and review any supporting materials ahead of time.
- Engage in Board Activities: Actively participate in board discussions, sharing ideas, demonstrating leadership, and approaching issues with strategic and creative thinking.
- Contribute to the Association’s Growth: Offer ideas to enhance the Alumni Association's value and relevance and ensure it meets the needs of the alumni constituency.
- Serve on a Standing Committee: Each board member must serve on at least one standing committee and participate actively in discussions and projects.
- Serve as an Ambassador: Promote the university and the Alumni Association's programs and services whenever possible. Attend university and alumni events with a preference for signature events like Homecoming.
- Support Financially: Support Missouri State University through personal philanthropy, prioritizing giving financially to the university to the best of your ability.
- Represent All Alumni: Ensure that the interests of all alumni are represented without favoring any specific group or individual interests.
- Recruit Future Leaders: Actively assist in identifying, cultivating, and recruiting future leaders for the Alumni Association.
- Assist in Nominations: Help identify and nominate deserving individuals for the Association’s annual alumni awards.
- Travel Expenses: Board members are responsible for personal travel expenses related to meeting attendance. The Office of Alumni Relations will provide meals during on-campus association meetings.
Term Length: Directors serve three-year terms and may be re-elected for one additional term, subject to the recommendation of the Nominating Committee.
- Meeting Attendance: Directors are expected to attend three board meetings annually on campus. When necessary, directors may participate remotely via Zoom.
- Committee Work: The board works through committees between meetings. Most committees meet virtually once per month to discuss and progress ongoing projects.
- Time Commitment: Directors should expect to dedicate a minimum of 2-4 hours per month to association-related activities, including committee work and other board responsibilities.
- Additional Responsibilities for Committee Chairs and Officers: Depending on the scope of assigned projects, committee chairs and officers may need to invest additional hours per month to fulfill their roles effectively.
